notes from the interblags: the I’m off to Europe edition

I have to clean out a few tabs before heading off for vacation. I leave in 40 minutes for San Francisco, and then tomorrow I’m flying to Europe! I can hardly believe it; I’ve never been, so this should be a fun and eye-widening experience. But here’s a few things I’ve been meaning to read or post about (with no commentary):

• ‘Mom’ and ‘Dad’ banished by California: Schwarzenegger signs law outlawing terms perceived as negative to ‘gays’:

“Mom and Dad” as well as “husband and wife” effectively have been banned from California schools under a bill signed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who with his signature also ordered public schools to allow boys to use girls restrooms and locker rooms, and vice versa, if they choose.

• Henry Jenkins: Gender and Fan Coulture (Wrapping Up, Part One)

• The Valve: Academic Blogging Revisited

• Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication, vol. 13, issue 1.

• Leveraging the Academy: Suggestions for Radical Grad Students and Radicals Considering Grad School

• Blogs: A History, A Future

After this term, I have 5931 unread blog posts unread in my Bloglines Account. I think this means that I am too busy to sustain the reading I want, so sometime I have to cut out those blogs I find less interesting or that are there just for fun and amusement.

I use Google Reader as a way to bookmark blogs – there is a folder that does nothing but collect blog posts I don’t have time to read. That way if the urge strikes I can easily find the blog I want to check on and see what’s been going on.

Before I did that, i was trying to read ~500 posts per day. Now it’s down to 150 or so. Much more manageable.

    Enjoy your trip.

Thank goodness. I was feeling bad because I had 954 unread posts. I use Google Reader but still manage to fall behind and feel overwhelmed.
