Paul Bunyans Logging Camp

I will be researching the Paul Bunyan Logging Cap located in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. The research will include the impact the camp has had on the community, how the camp came to be, and why was it relocated in 1983?

This is an interesting topic and one I’m excited to research about. The camp was made to preserve the history of the logging industry in Eau Claire. Many people who have lived in the Eau Claire area know about the camp, but there are more than thousands that attend college here and have never even heard of it (myself included). So this research project gives me a great opportunity to learn about a major part of Eau Claire’s past!

There is a lot let for me to learn about it, and since the camp is only open from May 1st through September 30th, I won’t be able to go visit the camp myself. So by using the archives at the Mcyntire Library, and using secondary sources online and in books I should be able to find enough information to answer my questions at hand.

  1. I think this will be an interesting topic, especially because I think many of us knew nothing about it until we had a reading excerpt from it a month or so ago. Who knew Eau Claire was a major logging city? The camp also intrigues me. I have heard many stories about Paul Bunyan, however did not know we had a logging camp named after him here in Eau Claire. I will be curious to find out why logging became less popular here? I would assume it had to do with the progression of time and technology, but I don’t know any truth behind that. I would assume that the Logging Camp site itself would give some nice background information!

  2. Such an interesting topic! Since I am from the Eau Claire area I have had the privilege to visit this wonderful camp. Hopefully some day you will be able to go see it for yourself. I visited the camp when I was quite young, but still remember a few things about the camp. When writing your blogs maybe think about who is the audience the camp is targeting? Mainly youth probably, but I think it is informational for all ages. Find out how it can relate to everyone in the Eau Claire area. Also think about what other attractions are in that area. For example, the Chippewa Valley HIstorical museum, which is also a very big part of the exhibit! Logging had a huge impact in Western Wisconsin, it will be interesting to see what you write in your blogs to explain what happened!

  3. I think you have a good topic that connects to the local community. You also have a good reason to research it because I did not know about it till you posted about. One thing you might want to address is what do they actually do at the camp itself because I have know idea of what they do there. Overall I think you topic is very interesting and that you will learn very cool things about the camp during you research.

  4. I believe that you have a very well-chosen topic because even as you said, not a whole lot of people knew that Eau Claire was a logging community, or even that there is a Paul Bunyan camp. Because not many have heard about this camp, you may want to keep in mind who you are writing to and what your audience is. I would also tell you that it would be a good idea to talk about the founders of this camp and why they started it themselves. Going back to the creators of something can be very helpful when researching about anything, such as getting to know about an author before reading his book. This is an interesting topic and it sounds like you are excited about this topic and can’t wait to hear what you’ve found!
