Luke Sugie and I just submited a proposal to the upcoming Your Voices, Your Conference, held at Oregon State in January. We titled our program: “My Social Justice Dick is Bigger Than Your Social Justice Dick: Or, Towards a Less Oppressive Social Justice Pedagogy.” Description:
In our program, we would like to discuss the ways in which we talk about social justice, particularly focusing on the ways in which our conversations often demean the dignity of those who disagree with us, or those who agree with us but might not be as “socially conscious“ as we are. How much of our dialogue about social justice becomes a competition of “waving social justice dicks“? How much harm is done in the way we attempt to educate each other? We would like to explore different, alternative ways of talking about oppression with those who do not agree with us.
I’m excited (if we get accepted).
