Sex ed through data-sharing mobile apps. This campaign is pretty fascinating!
Yay! for Public Health….sexual health education at it’s finest!!
The Swedish agency Ester put together the ultimate safe sex campaign for Stockholm citizens who happen to have one of the worst safe-sex records in Europe. The campaign worked like this:
- Ester handed out 50,000 condoms with a QR code on the package which pointed to a mobile app which monitored statistics during sex such as rhythm, sound, and duration (complete with geo-tagging).
- Upon starting the app a timer started counting down accompanied by an animation which encouraged time to put on a condom before “engaging.”
- Participants could create a profile and upload their sex graph to the app’s website which included global graphs/stats and even a search engine for comparisons by age, personality, and even “favorite shoes.”
- Upon collecting a sea of data Ester hung up posters around the city with aggregate statistics such as “romantic punks make the most noise” and “this weekend 38 people got laid downtown.”
Absolutely brilliant. And not only did it meet its goal of promoting safe sex, it wildly exceeded expectations. Over the summer 5,900 sex graphs were recorded (590% over goal) and 39% of participants said they were more likely to use a condom (98% over goal).
