I couldn’t get the redirection to work from my old site because, for some reason, when I told it the new URL in the WordPress dashboard, the redirection insisted on adding /~farism/ to the new URL. But, thanks to this helpful site, I finally got an easy and simple way by making a .htaccess file and putting it in my root directory.
The only problem is that old links to individual posts won’t work correctly anymore because I used ugly urls instead of pretty permalinks, and when I moved my posts over, they got renumbered! What this means is that if you ever linked to, say, post 197, then it’s now going to link to a different post.
I went ahead and changed the new blog to pretty permalinks, though, so that this problem won’t develop in the future. You know, it used to be you referenced something and it was a book sitting on a shelf and the title of that book never changed. (Of course, who knew where that book was and how easy it was to access it, if it hadn’t been lost or destroyed.) Ah, the good ol’ days. π
And yes, my friend Eric will have a big “I told you so” in response to this because of when he told me I should do pretty permalinks a long time ago.
EDIT: I didn’t consider this, but the links to individual posts won’t be a huge problem for too long, because I think I’ll lose my Oregon State webspace in December.
π you remember that time when we were talking about permalinks…
