Today I’m actually honoring Buy Nothing Day, the marked abstinence from purchasing in order to protest hyper-consumerism and commodification on what is now known as “Black Friday.” Via Dennis Dugan, a graphic Op-Ed at the LA Times, an excerpt of which is reproduced here:
The image is pretty cool, I think, so you should check it out. Over the last few years, I’ve actually spent money, though usually only on gas or groceries. Today, nothing.
Amen to that, brother!
The consumerism on this day is so blatant it can make me sick to my stomach.
I bought nothing. I’m actually afraid to venture out of my home on that day. While I needed to get some groceries today, I was still worried about the crowds. Fortunately, the grocery store was relatively empty and it was a nice shopping experience.
